I just got my Aerogarden today. As time goes on, I will add more to this review.
I have been looking at the Aerogarden product for a few years now and decided to take the plunge after one failed attempt at my own hydroponic garden (the dog ate my plants... no really), and several container gardens and self watering garden attempts. By big problem growing anything is I always pick the wrong season.
I went to my local hydroponics store and asked the store manager (and owner) about the aerogarden and he said it was a nice system, a little expensive for what you get, but an idiot should be able to do it. I then went to Amazon and purchased the Aerogarden.
I am so bad with plants that even my silk flowers died of over watering
The system arrived and I was able to put the system together without really reading the instructions. I did carefully read the parts about the planting and the plants. So here is what you get for your money...
a plastic tub that holds water, that has an air stone and a concealed air pump, a small computer that turns the lights on and off, some lights, I got the herb kit and some round tablets that are the fertilizer.
The light is bright, and is a really white light, not like the yellows that are normally found in houses. Without a comparison you will not really know what I mean, but this light is white and fairly bright. Areogarden should have made the housing the bulb sits in with a reflector, just to get more lights to the plants. I have mine on a spare room I use an an office so not a problem.
I have read many places that people are complaining about the loudness of the air pump. I can barely hear the air pump when I and standing over the Aerogarden
Another complaint that I have read is the fertilizer tablets. The tablets that I received were a bid wet, so I placed them in the freezer as I have read elsewhere.
Once you start your system, there is some work you have to do. Every two seeks you add more fertilizer tablets and two weeks later you have to clean out the water reservoir, refill and add more tablets. You will be needing a small watering can with spout, and you will need to keep your eye on the water level.
So what is the Aerogarden. Basically a grow light, water with nutrients, a sponge for a wick to keep the plants watered and a air pump to oxygenate and move the water around, and a timer to turn the lights on and off.
The lights have a life span of 6 months, after that, the light will come on, but the spectrum will be changed due to the age of the bulb.
As time goes on, I will add more comments.
Update 5/15/10
Garden doing fine Several have sprouted already 2 have not
5/20/10
All herbs sprouted. No problems
June 3rd 2010
The plants are growing nicely. After I purchased the Aerogarden Space saver 6, I also purchased two of the aerogarden classic 7 pod
I have the lights come at at night around 6:00 P/M. the good news is that I need no other light in the 10x10 room they are growing in. The lights do make the room warmer. This Aerogarden device needs some attending too. You must check on the plants at least once a day. Check to make sure the lights are all working (I have found one that came loose and tightened it, and no problems) you must watch your water levels. The container will not last two weeks. You will want to purchase a watering can. I purchased the "OXO 1069727 Good Grips Indoor Pour & Store 3.17-Quart Watering Can" that can be found here on amazon. To prevent mold from growing on your plants, it is best to have a fan blowing on them.
When I purchased this aerogarden, I also planted a tomato and pepper plant in a container using Miracle Grow potting soil, moisture control with fertilizer, made a make shift drip system with a timer. To be honest with you, the tomato plant and the pepper plant have massively out grown the aerogarden, and since planter is on a timer, the planter has required a lot less attention. bu tomatoes and peppers are in season, so I guess out of season the aerogarden is great, easy to use and I have managed not to kill anything yet.
Like all devices that you depend on, you have to keep spare parts around. If a light bulb goes out (and this aerogarden takes two light bulbs)you have a mess on you hands. there is not enough light with just one bulb. The Aerogarden web site is frequently out. So , please keep spare parts on hand like lights, filters and pumps. All these items are difficult to get because the aerogarden company is out of stock frequently.
Since Amazon only sells the aerogarden with the herb kit, the new gardens came with liquid nutes that I am now using in the SS6

Stays lit for 16 hours, so if you are afraid of energy costs, this is not for you. This item is a constant (24 hour) energey drain. Also suggest, (unless you want it as a night light), don't start it in the afternoon. The settings/times can be readjusted. Does grow very well and easily. Most of the herbs are flourishing. I love seeing the green when it is snowing outside. The chives never took. I got one sprout that didn't root and nothing after that.

Gave as a gift and 3 weeks in said it works well. The lights had to be raised because the plants are growing so well. Would buy again.

Excellent gift. A hobby for anyone. The Aerogarden Elite is a very well designed, easy to use and decorative as well for a kitchen corner. It uses an aerating water pump which runs very silently. Lamps turns ON for 16 hours every day so it can keep kitchen lit during night time. I love its contruction which has a stainless steel like finish on top where pods are located and should avoid corrosion due to moisture. The elite model is a bit more expensive but I believe is worth the extra cost.
